In memory of Fritzie who passed away today.
Fritzie Sommer, born September 25, 2006, was a female tortoiseshell cat, and adopted baby of Naomi and Karsten Sommer.
Fritzie is best known to Team Sommer’s family and friends for her use of the doona, a cloaking device she covered her entire body with, enabling her to become completely invisible to anyone looking for her.
She is considerably best known for the “funny face”, an open mouth expression with a gaze in awe, after sniffing Karsten’s feet or the carpet.
Naomi and Karsten rescued Fritzie from the RSPCA in Rutherford. She was Naomi’s choice, after Fritzie started climbing all over her. In the meantime, Karsten’s choice vomited while having a poop in the cat toilet. Unknown to Team Sommer at the time, Fritzie had the proclivity of “calling her people” while being transported in a car. It appears to this day that she never enjoyed car rides.
Fritzie experienced a name change, after she was rescued from the RSPCA. She was initially named “Fritz the Cat”, after a 1972 American animated porn film of the same name. Unfortunately, the joke did not last when Naomi found out.
Since the name change, there have been continued arguments over her name spelling, Fritzie or Fritzi.
As a kitten, Fritzie was somewhat entertaining. She would fetch a thrown down the hallway toy, and return it. She later became lazy, would chase after the toy but wait for someone else to pick it up.
She was also a little bit of a sick girl, which resulted in several visits to the vet in the early days, and eventually led to a life on dry food and water.
For the most, Fritzie did not enjoy the company of strangers. Once she became relatively comfortable with someone, she tricked you into false hope of physical contact; then used her trademark “triple punch” attack to make you reconsider your options.
Fritzie spoke some English and some German. She would often say “aua”, accompanied by a casual lick. Her expression of “mama” was regularly uttered after a feed while licking her chops.
She was often greeted by mostly daddy with several German expressions of the common greeting “Na, du…”.
This would often lead to “Na, du Stinker?”, “Na, du Schlumpfekaiser?”, “Na, du Schumpfekovsky?”, and occasionally “Na, du Arschloch?”. More often, mummy and daddy would greet her with “Na, du kleiner Scheisser?”.
Apart from the nicknames used in the formal German greeting, she had also several other, mostly compassionate, nicknames. The most common one, and predominantly used by mummy, was “Sweet Girl”, more so when Fritzie snuggled up with mummy in bed.
Though she had the urge to jump inside every shoe box, she did not fit any box.
Despite her feline traits, she was more human then humans. She would know when it was time to wake up, and when it was time to go to bed.
Her need to lay on top of the Christmas wrapping paper was not always a present to mankind but will never be the same come Christmas.
And the only thing that we could ever hold against her was lying on the tortoiseshell tiles in our old kitchen. What a camouflage!
We will always love you, we will never forget you. You brought us so much joy over the 15 years, and you are leaving so much emptiness and precious memories.
Thank you for sharing your last moments with us.
Fritzie Sommer passed away on March 25, 2022, at the age of 15 human years, following a short, intense illness.

Mach´s gut, Fritzie...
